Basketball Tournament organized by AGBU Toronto was a huge success
The Victoria Day long-weekend was a busy one at the AGBU Center in Toronto. The weekend activities kicked off on Friday, May 18th with two basketball games between AGBU Toronto and Montreal followed by a Kef Night of delicious food and dancing through the night.
The tournament continued on Saturday May 19th with visiting athletes from Montreal and Detroit. The day was filled with great competition and many nail-biting moments. A particularly exciting game was between the junior boys of Toronto and Detroit. With a tie-game by the end of regulation, the game was forced into overtime. After intense 3-minute overtime, the game was tied yet again!
With 17 scheduled games for the three-day tournament, the games continued bright and early on Sunday. The sunny weather, smells of BBQ and sounds of music created a great atmosphere. The AGBU Montreal Band also made the trip to Toronto to provide magnificent performances of the Armenian, Canadian and American national anthems on both days. The gym was packed with happy faces both young and old and it was also a great opportunity for old friends from different cities to reconnect.
The tournament saw a good variety of competition between many different age groups. Divisions included Pee Wee Boys & Girls (12 and under), Bantam Boys & Girls (Ages 13-15), Junior Boys & Girls (Ages 16-18), Senior Men (19+) and Veteran Men (35+).
AGBU Montreal took home the trophy for the Junior Boys division while AGBU Toronto won the Pee Wee Boys & Girls, Bantam Boys, Bantam Girls, Junior Girls, Senior Men & Veteran Men divisions.
The Sports & Youth Committee thanks all visiting athletes, coaches and parents who joined us in Toronto for a successful tournament. The SYC would also like to thank all local athletes, coaches, parents and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this tournament a memorable one.
We look forward to seeing you all next year!
